Becoming a search engine evaluator can be a great way to work from home while earning a good income. Here’s everything you need to know to land the job.

Ninety-three percent of online experiences begin with a search engine.  (source)  So chances are that you have done a few internet searches in your day.  Probably even today!

Have you noticed how much Google and other search engines have improved over the years?  Once we had to sort through pages of information to find what we were looking for.  Now, Google can find you the answer to just about any question in no time flat.

That’s all thanks to the work of search engine evaluators.

It’s a necessary job, and one that you just might have the skills to try out yourself!  But just what does it take to land a job as a search engine evaluator?  Let’s talk.

Everything You Need to Know Being A Search Engine Evaluator

Search Engine Evaluator Jobs: Fantastic Work From Home

What Is a Search Engine Evaluator?

People in a Search engine evaluator position evaluate internet search items using certain terms, words, or phrases.  Then you’ll judge the quality of the results you receive.  The goal is to improve user experience to make sure people are getting the best results for words they enter into a search bar or search for using their voice.

Sometimes you’ll be provided with a list of terms.  Other jobs are based on your own search history.

Some of these jobs really dig in to your own usage of search engines such as Google.  So this job might not be a good match for people who prefer their privacy.  But if you don’t mind (because let’s be honest…we all know Google already knows what we’ve searched for), why not gain from what you’re already doing?

Pros for This Work

You can work at home in your PJs.  It’s hard to beat a home based job!

The work is extremely flexible.  When you’re ready to work, you log in.  You choose the task you want to complete from a long list.  When you finish that task, you decide if you have time to do another.  If not, you quit.

That’s the dream, especially for moms who want to work while their kids sleep!

Cons

One good thing is that there is a lot of helpful information available to you.  That said, there is still room for interpretation. And you are the one who has to do the interpreting.  When the searcher types in “how to be a stay at home mom”, are they trying to quit their job?  Or are they trying to find out exactly what a stay at home mom does?

Two different meanings means two different search engine results they could see based on how you interpret their search.  And your moderator (i.e. boss) gets to make the final decision on whether you interpreted it correctly.

Another thing to consider is your time.

When you log the amount of time you spend rating, it’s based on company expectations rather than how long it actually takes you to work.  If a job takes you 6 hours to do, but the company expects you to get it done in 4 hours, you’ll be paid for 4 hours.

Being efficient is key, but unfortunately, there are times when even that doesn’t help you get work done in the time expected.

Also worth noting is that, even though you are an independent contractor, you could be required to work at least 10 hours per week to keep your job.  But truthfully, if you plan to work less than 10 hours per week, you probably aren’t looking for an actual job anyway.

How Much Money Do You Make With Leapforce or Lionbridge?

Pay for this job starts at $13 per hour.  (Keep in mind that you’re paid by the hours they expect you to get the job done in.  Which is not necessarily the correct hours that it actually takes.  So your final pay per hour could be less.)
