Get the list of proven stay at home mom jobs to make extra money with a low barrier to entry here.
Being a stay at home mom with your kids is probably something you’ve always dreamed about doing.
It’s so hard to juggle everything that comes with working a full time job and everything that comes with being mom to those adorable (and sometimes frustrating) babies.
Unfortunately…sometimes, just as we finally figure out a way to afford to stay home with the kids, something totally unexpected knocks us for a loop.
Sometimes it’s a major house or car expense. Or a health crisis.
Or, like now, (and like for me…I became a sahm in 2007, just in time for the economic crash of 2008), the economy goes south in a hurry. And suddenly, things that were affordable a few months ago are now way out of your price range.
So now you’re in a mental crisis.
Should you go back to work?
Are there really legitimate jobs for stay at home moms so you can bring in some extra money?
Well, the answer is yes.
If you’re willing to put in some actual work.
Stay At Home Mom Jobs To Bring In Extra Money
Here are jobs I have legitimately worked myself to bring in extra money since becoming a stay at home mom.
I know that it can be totally intimidating to get started in a brand new job, so I’ve included my favorite resources for each of these job ideas. Some of them are totally free!
Blogging
Since you’re reading my blog right now 😉 and because it’s been my most steady, best income job, I’ll start with being a blogger.
Becoming a blogger is hands down my favorite thing I’ve done to bring in extra money.
That’s because you get the additional benefits of creating something of your very own. (It’s incredible to me that I was able to build this business out of absolutely nothing.)
It kind of doubles as a hobby and work.
Since you are your own boss, you can work whenever and wherever. (That has its ups and downs, of course.) So you can fit it into the schedule to fit your kid’s needs.
I’ve blogged while the kids nap. Stayed up hours later than everyone else to work. Worked when my hubby got home from his job. Put in little bits and pieces of time whenever I could. Sat down for one long 8-10 hour day once per week.
Whatever it takes.
The con to blogging would be that it will probably take you some time to make any money at all. You have to keep working, even when you don’t see any return.
Check out this interesting blog post that talks about how long it takes to make $500 while blogging.
The Best Blogging Resources
Here’s a fantastic free resource to learn how to start your own blog.
Now, if you are going to become a blogger (or if you already are one), I kind of have to insist that you learn about Pinterest. It’s the best way to help people find out about your blog.
And you need to learn from the gurus.
Carly is a Pinterest guru, and she understands way more about how that website works than I ever could. But by following her simple to understand strategies, I’ve been able to drive my Pinterest traffic way up. (Enough that I took off two years from blogging and still had an income simply because people clicked over from Pinterest.)
Selling on Ebay
Last year, we suddenly discovered that our home needed a huge repair.
There was no way I was financing that.
So I thought about even more ways I could bring in extra money.
And I remembered that I had success selling things on eBay several years ago.
Well, I wondered if you even could still make money on eBay these days, so I started looking into it again.
And, what do you know? You totally can. Selling on eBay helped me save up hundreds of dollars towards that big repair bill.
One fun thing about selling on eBay is that you get to go shopping for treasures (as long as you don’t get too caught up in buying more than you can afford!).
And learning that some weird thing you found is actually worth a couple hundred bucks is a fun rush!
The con to eBay is finding a place to store all that stuff while you wait for it to sell.

Check out this excellent Ebay Beginners Guide. It’s just $7! And it teaches you how to start off selling on Ebay, even if you have $0 to invest in it.
General Transcription
My sister actually did general transcription for many years to help support her family.
I tried my hand at it for a year, and I didn’t hate it. 😉
(Blogging was more fun for me, but obviously every person is different in what they enjoy.)
With general transcription, you often have hard deadlines to meet. This can be difficult if a kid suddenly gets sick, etc, but that’s really no different than any other job you’ve probably had.
If you can’t find a quiet room in your home, you can invest in noise cancelling headphones. So don’t let that stop you from trying this out.
One funny benefit I didn’t expect was that I lost weight while doing this job! I worked in the evenings and into the late hours, times when I normally am snacking after a long day of chasing kids.
When your hands are occupied typing, you can’t snack. Woohoo! haha

And if (like me) you can’t help but wonder how long transcription will still be a job with AI and ChatGPT these days, here’s a blog post explaining why you shouldn’t worry about that.
Selling On Amazon FBA
Ok, so I have not yet tried my hand at selling on Amazon (yet).
BUT my sister has been selling on Amazon very successfully for the past couple of years. To the point that I can’t help but wonder if I shouldn’t try it myself. (Or at least convince my teenagers to do it!)
The con to selling on Amazon is that they often change the rules, and there is a tough learning curve.
You’ll definitely want to use a strong resource like The Selling Family to keep up with all of that.

Selling MLM Like Avon or Pampered Chef
I suppose it’s possible to sell MLM items without leaving your house, so I’ll include this one.
Both Avon and Pampered Chef were companies I sold early on in my SAHM journey.
Making a little money was possible, but I certainly never became my own boss selling these things.
In fact, the requirements to buy books and samples left me with almost no profit at the end of the day.
So I can’t really recommend this one. Although I’m sure it looks different now than it did back in 2008, I also think that the basic stumbling blocks to making money selling MLM items are the same.
