If I could convince a family trying to get out of debt to try just one thing, it would be this: Always have snacks and drinks ready to go.
The trusty Coleman cooler and a bag of quick snacks would be my “get out of debt mascot”. (If a “get out of debt mascot” was a thing. Ahem.)
That’s because families these days are always on the go!! How often do you stop for a drink or quick snack for your hungry kids?
You do it, because hungry kids are not a lot of fun to be stuck in the car or on the sidelines with! And it’s perfectly fine.
I’m not telling you to stop their snacking. I’m telling you that there’s a much better way to afford those snacks! Here’s how.
Easy Snack Ideas So You Can Save Money
The Cooler
I keep a small cooler with a handle handy in the kitchen. It usually has bottles of water or some of our other favorite drinks already in it.
All I have to do is add some ice (or just an ice block!) and head out the door!
If it’s easy, you’ll actually follow through.
The Bowl
You could buy prepackaged snacks. And if that makes life easier for you, go for it. You’ll still save far more money than you would on concession stand or convenience store prices!
But for even bigger savings, grab a big family sized package of snacks! You can portion them out into sandwich bags yourself.
Stick those baggies in a bowl or bag for easy grab and go!
The Reminder
Convinced you’ll still forget? Leave a post it note on the front door or even on your steering wheel! After a while, grabbing these things will become a habit.
And if you buy the right snacks, the kids won’t let your forget. 😉 😉
Easy Snack Ideas from Walmart
On a recent trip to Walmart, I was able to find these big family sized packs of snacks. Not only are they some of my family’s favorite snacks (who doesn’t love OREOS?!), but there’s a bonus: every pack has a chance to win a big prize!
They’re all marked with the Collect To Win sticker, so look for them! Make sure you stop by your Walmart, because these specially marked game packages aren’t available online.
I brought home a couple of bags, and the kids couldn’t wait to see if we had won.
It’s so easy! You just peel off the “Collect to Win” booklet, scratch off the boxes (everyone is going to want to do this part!), and collect them to see if you can make a match!
If you can spell S-N-A-C-K, you’ll win a $10,000 Walmart Gift Card!! (That will buy a lot of groceries!)
Didn’t spell SNACK? That’s ok…you could still be an instant winner! Prizes include a trip to Orlando, FL, an XBox One Console, thousands of Walmart gift cards, or OREO chocolate candy bars! (Yum!!)

Have you ever won something fun?
The cooler trick is definitely one my family can use! We are really bad about buying drinks on the go, but as a family of 6, it adds up quick.
The tip about portioning our snacks is practical and valuable for my family , too. Keeping kids fed is one of the key components for preventing meltdowns, for all of us.
