One of the first things I did after learning that we were expecting our first child was to buy a few books. Casey at the Bat and Sing Sophie were favorites to read to my belly bump! Besides, we weren’t chasing small kids yet and had plenty of time on our hands.
Reading to small kids is important for many reasons. If you can get kids interested in books at a young age, they are more likely to enjoy reading when they are older. As for our family, we love to laugh! So funny picture books are among our top choices.
Here are some of our favorite, time tested, funny picture books.

Funny Picture Books You’ll Love to Read!
Click, Clack, Moo
Click, Clack, Moo This book is about cows who find a typewriter and begin making demands. In the end, the Duck is the real star. He goes on to have a few feature books of his own, including Giggle, Giggle, Quack and Duck for President.
What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?

What’s the Time, Mr Wolf? The finger puppet that is part of the book really makes this book a winner. Kids love to have the Wolf “eat” their fingers!
Doctor Ted Series
Doctor Ted Ted has a pretty great imagination, although neither his mother, teachers, nor principal seem to appreciate it. Not until they need his expertise, of course.
The Pigeon
In The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog, the Chick learns all about the beauty of a hot dog. The Pigeon learns about the beauty of sharing. Your kids will crack up and want to “read” it to you!
Elephant and Piggy
We Are in a Book! (Elephant & Piggy) The whole Elephant and Piggy series is pretty funny. This book especially had my kids in stitches!
Skippyjon Jones
Skippyjon Jones Skippyjon is a cat who thinks he is a dog. He also loves to speak with a Spanish accent. If you aren’t great at reading with a Spanish accent, have no fear! The author spells it right out for you. Hilarious voice not included.
Froggy
Froggy Goes to Camp This book will have parents nodding in understanding with Froggy’s parents. It will have kids giggling at Froggy’s antics!

Aliens Love Underpants
Aliens Love Underpants Creatures from outer space? Check. Mild potty talk? Check. Crazy antics? Check, check. Clearly hilarious.
The Remarkable Farkle McBride
The Remarkable Farkle McBride This book (written by John Lithgow) is as much fun to read as it is to hear. The kids really enjoy Farkle’s silly behavior. You’ll love the tongue twisters that somehow roll right off of the tongue.
These books were some definite favorites for our family. What are some tried and true books that your family loves to laugh at? (Be sure to check out the comments for some more great book ideas!)
These are definitely some good books. You have included several of our favorites. We LOVE the ‘Click, Clack, Moo’ series. We’ll have to look for some of the others that I haven’t seen, including Doctor Ted and the Remarkable Farkle McBride. There’s another series that my kids have recently fallen in love with, it’s “There was an Old Woman who Swallowed a _______.” by Lucille Colandro. We also really enjoy the Fly Guy books.
Those are good books, too! We have another kindergartner here, so we will be reading a lot of Fly Guy books again very soon. 🙂
I grew up with my mom and grandma telling me stories. I think it is such an important part of childhood.
Lovely tips.
Thanks for joining #tiptuesday!
I love to read and I never tire of reading children’s books. My six children are either grown or in High School now but we still have conversations about the books we read together when they were little. These are some great suggestions and a few were new to me!
Another great benefit of reading with your kids…great memories. 🙂
Such a fun list! I read some of these to my kindergartners, and we all loved them. 🙂
I assume you’ve also read The Book With No Pictures? That one had my students roaring… and the parents kept bringing it in to read at birthdays (without knowing of the overlap of course) so we ended up hearing it about six times. ;P
Pinning this onto some of my teacher boards!
I will have to check that one out. Sounds like it must be a fun one!
Some of these books are new to me. I’ll keep them for future reference since my son is only 16 months old. We have started going to the library this past month, and he loves to look though his books when we get home. I hope it continues as he gets older!
I think starting at an early age really helps them to love reading! Great job introducing books at an early age.
Thanks so much for this awesome list we definitely love to laugh in our family some times we get so tickled everything is funny ! I love reading to my littles and these will be perfect !! Thanks for coming by Welcome Home Wednesdays Laci @ Sequinsinthesouth

Those are some great ones. You might also like The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers and Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. Those are recent Maryland Black-Eyed Susan award winners my kids voted on!
We love creepy carrots here. We also read Can You Make a Scary Face by Jan Thomas then went and bought all her books. Kids love them. We’re going to the library tomorrow so we’ll have to check these out.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment, Jamie. I replied there. 🙂 Following you on Google now.
Thanks so much for the follow! I’m going to have to add those books to our library list, they sound great.
Thanks for the suggestions! I’m adding them to my library requests.
We’ve read one or two of these and loved them. I can’t wait to find the others too, thanks for sharing your finds!
So much fun! Reading was such a big part of my childhood, and I love reading to my 16 month old. I can;t wait until he’s more aware of what I’m reading and he can giggle along!
I loved reading with my girls when they were little – Thanks for linking up to Pin Worthy Wednesday, I have pinned your post to the Pin Worthy Wednesday Pinterest Board.

Those books have been favorites of ours for nearly a dozen years. They are so much fun!
Hey, great share…..
Bedtime stories have long been known to foster parent-child bonds and prepare children for sleep. Reading also helps children with their confidence levels, coping with feelings and language and learning. I am surely going to get one of these for my kids.
Thanks for sharing this great list of books. Keep sharing more….
Cheers!!
