This week we had a family emergency that made it necessary for my Hubby and one of our sons to make a sudden trip a couple of states away.  If you need a compelling reason to get out of debt, this is the one.  Who wants to worry about covering expenses at a time like that?

Getting out of debt has been a real struggle, because so many emergencies and repair bills seem to crop up when you have the best intentions.  But even more important than seeing our debt number shrink to $0 has been getting out of the habit of using credit cards.  So at least we have that going for us.

I catch a glimpse of the time as I swat at the obnoxious noise coming from my alarm clock.

That can’t be right…I overslept again?

Quickly I rush around to wake up kids and make sure they have everything they need.

Backpacks.  A packed lunch.  Clothes for gym class.  

Oh, wait. Breakfast. 

And that moment is when I’m most thankful that I made a quick batch of easy oatmeal breakfast bars that we can grab on our way out the door.

This week has taken a toll on all of us, no matter which side of the vote you find yourself on.  I stayed up very late to watch election results roll in, and I’m still chugging coffee and trying to make up for lost sleep!

But today we celebrate Veterans Day.  If you’ve served or your family has, thank you so much for all of your sacrifice and service to our country!

Sometimes I wonder if my Hubby regrets uttering the phrase #yearofno.  He came up with the hashtag, and I grabbed it like a baton and ran with it!  But honestly, I know he’s as relieved by the change in our finances as I am.  (Maybe more?)

#Yearofno has been a serious game changer in our lives.  It’s less about a spending freeze and more about a change in thinking.  I’ve learned so much in these past 10 months!

You check the mail one bright April day.  There’s another shiny toy catalog, some credit card offers, and a statement for your retirement fund.  You don’t want to open that one.  It’s just more bad news, or another bill for repayment.

Your eyes turn to that shiny toy catalog.  You aren’t sure if you should show it to the kids or not.  They always want everything inside.  When you buy those things for them, they’re happy for a little while.  But you can’t help but notice that most of the things you got them last Christmas are missing, broken, or at the bottom of a pile somewhere.

I watched my kids collect items from around the house for their costumes, and it made my heart happy.  No one begged for a pricey costume this year.  Contentment is a tough thing to grasp, but oh so important in life.

I’m not telling you that we’re masters of contentment.  Far from it!  It’s a lesson you have to learn over and over.  But we have plenty of chances to practice.
